Essay Competition was organized by Dr. Ishrat V. Shaikh for the F.Y & S.Y.B.Sc. students on 08/7/2017 as a part of their Co-curricular activities in the Zoology Lab. Dr. Jaspal Kaur Oberoi (Dept. of Microbiology) was invited as judge. Students took efforts by meeting the staff, reading books, searching websites etc to obtain knowledge on the topic they were interested in. Judges carefully observed each participant on criteria such as content, presentation & conclusion

INAUGRATION   OF   Zoology Association – “eZOOcation”

2016-17

The Zoology dept of our college is very active and dynamic. The students of FY and SY formed a association called eZOOcation as a platform to explore, understand and conserve animal    biodiversity and give a platform to budding zoologists to discuss different aspect related to Zoology The Inaugural Function was organized on 29^th December, 2016

The function was organized in Room no: 222 at 12:45 pm.  F.Y.B.Sc. and S.Y.B.Sc. students who were members and their working committee were present for the inaugural function. . Dr Narahari P. Gramapurohit, Assistant Professor Department of Zoology, SPPU Pune was the chief guest. Our Vice-Principal Dr. Shaila Bootwala presided over the function.

As per our tradition the function began by the recitation of the holy Quran. Dr.Ishrat V. Shaikh, Head, Dept. of Zoology spoke about aims and objectives of eZOOcation .The Principal gave the welcome speech and addressed the students. He motivated students to participate in various activities of the Association.

After this Ms Nusrat Perween, Dept of Zoology introduced the guest Dr. Narahari Gramapurohit, The chief guest was felicitated by the Vice-Principal with a bouquet and College magazine.Dr. Narahari Gramapurohit, then spoke in detail regarding the innovative Zoology activities which can be conducted by the association. He urged them to identify problems which the subject is facing and work towards reducing it. The students were highly motivated by this lecture.

 Finally a formal vote of thanks was proposed by Ms Summaiya Shaikh, Dept of Zoology to conclude the programme.

Summary of Guest Lecture

Understanding the breeding ecology is critical in determining the factors (both extrinsic and intrinsic) that control reproduction including reproductive behavior. Sexual selection is an important component of reproductive behaviour. Sexual selection was devised by Charles Darwin to specifically explain the evolution of certain traits within a species that accrue fitness in exclusive relation to reproduction. Sexual selection has two components: intrasexual selection generally referred to as male-male competition and intersexual selection often referred to as female choice. In some species male-male competition can be a dominant mode of sexual selection while in others, female choice. However, these two are not mutually exclusive as switch-over between the two modes has been observed.

On the 29^th Decmeber , 2016 , the zoology department at Abeda Inamdar sr. college , Pune hosted the official inauguration of the AISC Zoology association- ‘eZOOcation’.  The chief guest for the occasion was Dr. Narahari Gramapurohit Assistant professor of Department of Zoology Savitribai Phule University  . What was initially meant to be a very formal affair, ending up being immensely moving, not to mention deeply thought-provoking.

The ceremony began with recitation of verses of Quran by student Hajrah Sayyed .Dr. Ishrat Shaikh HOD, Department of Zoology , AISC, gave a heart-felt speech about the significance of conservation and its need with the help of example of extinct bird DODO. . She gave the audience an idea about what the zoology department of the college is all about, and what motivates its students to study biology and animals so closely. She also mentions the objective behind the Zoology association .

After the felicitation of chief guest Principal , Dr. Shaila Bootwala has given a enthusiastic speech to motivate students . It was finally time for Dr. Narahari Gramapurohit to share his knowledge in the field of animal behaviour.  His lengthy talk with the students served as a spark that fueled the minds of everyone present to contemplate about the potential of the association to bring about actual change; maybe not on a large scale, but definitely on the college campus. This change could be cultivating interest for wildlife in students, or even to just spread knowledge about the state of affairs in our country ,when it comes to animal and plant ecology and conservation. 

Overall the inauguration had the right impact on all present, and served as a great opening for the association.
